SUSTAINABLILTY CAMPAIGN

The ocean, the sun and the wind is our shared universe, and protecting them our common objective. Phil Sharp, through his association with Imperial College and their climate change division, is committed to help in the fight against climate change and aims to promote sustainable development to a global audience through a “green team” platform.

With advances in energy technology, Phil believes it is now possible to race around the world on renewable power alone, and therefore aims to adapt his boat to become the first fully-sustainable racing yacht.

The Problem with Climate Change

Based on current predictions the average global temperature is set to rise 4ºC by 2055-2070, which will result in the entire loss of the polar ice-cap, mass flooding, and the destruction of 83% of the Amazon rainforest by 2100.

If we can cut emissions by 3% per year, we can limit temperature rise to a safe 2ºC, preventing greenhouse gas warming pushing the Earth past its critical tipping point.

The "Green Team" Platform

The green-team strategy includes the following aspects that will ultimately provide unique benefits for sponsors who view both environmental and commercial sustainability as core company values:

Online Education:Informing, inspiring and interacting with a global audience, via the team’s race website, around the environmental impacts associated with global warming. Features will be specific to the different regions of the world that Phil will be sailing through at the time. Sponsors will be heavily connected to the campaign to promote a clean, sustainable, and positive brand image.
Sustainable Eco-Yacht: The racing yacht will be fitted with the latest on-board renewable power generation technologies and aims to be the first, fully sustainable, round-the-world racing yacht. Energy will be captured using the latest solar technologies, wind turbines, and an innovative new underwater turbine beneath the boat to sustain sufficient power in the depths of the Southern Ocean.
Team development: Active involvement with sponsors through sailing days on the Eco-Yacht between races and prior to race starts, to educate the importance of sustainability and how it increases the environmental and economic performance of a modern business. This will increase internal communication, campaign awareness, and ultimately employee pride.
Footprint management: In-depth analysis and communication during the race of how Phil manages his energy usage most efficiently and ultimately inspire audiences to reduce their carbon footprint by having a similar energy-conscious mindset.
