A Night Wrestling With Light Winds
Wednesday, 23 April 2008
ImageWith the race only 4 days old, Phil and David have already experienced the whole gamut of weather conditions. Last night was a difficult night for the pair who experienced very light winds off the coast of Portugal. Ther westerly position saw them drop back overnight but they sailed strongly during the day to move back up to 16th and only 28 miles behind the leader. Tonight promises to be tricky with very light winds again forecast before starting to fill in from the NE tomorrow afternoon.

Phil's Thoughts on Day 3
Tuesday, 22 April 2008

Despite having an exhausting start to the race with really strong winds, Phil Sharp rang in this morning in an excitable mood. Thoroughly enjoying the challenge of racing against big names in the industry like Jean Le Cam, he was pleased with their position and hoping that their more Westerly option could pay off over the course of the next week.

"We've just had a pretty rough night (Monday). And it seems to take an eternity to get round Finisterre and the last thing you want to be doing is upwind. We've been doing it all night, so we're knackered! Some of the others are racing further inshore, but we've taken a more Western option, which may or may not pay off! It hasn't done as much as we'd hoped in the night as the others may have got a shift off the coast, but they may also get nailed by the current - don't wish them harm but I hope they get slowed by it!"

Windy Night Approaching Cape Finistere
Tuesday, 22 April 2008
ImageLast night was a tough night for the whole fleet as they faced strong headwinds of 30-35 knots from the south-south-west. Phil and David are currently about 20 mies off the coast of Spain, near La Coruna, and by early this afternoon are hoping to have rounded Cape Finistere and will be attempting to make ground towards Madeira, which they must round to Starboard. The wind is forecast to drop rapidly this evening as a high approaches the coast of Portugal which will leave the duo with some tricky navigational decisions ahead.
